An English subtitled trailer for J-horror ‘Higurashi
no Naku Koro ni’ aka 'Shrill Cries Of Summer' ('When
They Cry') has turned up over at Japanese distributor Shochiku
Films official site. Shochiku are repping the film at this
years Cannes film festival and an English subtitled trailer
is a very handy marketing tool, when your angling for some
lucrative U.S. rights deals. The movie, a live action remake
of the popular graphic novel is directed by Ataru Oikawa (Apartment
1303) stars Goki Maeda, Erena Ono, Airi Matsuyama and Rin
Asuka. 'Shrill Cries Of Summer' opens in Japan in May.
The plot:
"It's tough being the new guy in town, having just moved
into the small rural village of Hinamizawa, but when Keiichi
joins an after-school club and befriends four cute girls,
life doesn't seem too bad. That is, until he learns about
demonic cults and a failed Dam construction project, plus
the grisly murders and disappearances that have occurred every
year after the town festival. As shocking past events are
unveiled through different viewpoints, Keiichi learns that
things and even people aren't what they appear to be. How
many of his club "friends" are involved and what
are their plans for him?!

Chinese
website for John Woo's 'Red Cliff' goes live
The
official Chinese site for John Woo's mega budget historical
action movie 'The Battle Of Red Cliff,' has just gone online.
There isnt much content as yet, but there are menu buttons
by the shed load that are due to go live soon. Definitely
one to keep an eye on for updates. We sure will be! 'Battle
of Red Cliff' opens in Hong Kong in July.
The plot:
In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd
Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only
way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms
of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military
campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister,
himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms
of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles
of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually
culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle,
two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese
history was changed forever.

Upcoming
Indonesian horror 'Karma'
A
teaser poster has just been released for the upcoming movie
'Karma,' and we have to admit to being intrigued by the film,
as so far its looking very untypical for a standard Indonesian
horror production. For one thing it has none of the usual
Teens (wallowing in huge amounts of melodrama) in love, being
killed off by a long haired Demon. Instead we get this sophisticated
poster
and an intriguing plot:
"The
Guan family is put under an eternal spell: every woman in
the family is bound to suffer a tragic death. Still, this
does not deter Sandra (Dominique Agisca Diyose) to marry Armand
Guan (Joe Taslim), and pull out every possible effort to put
the long-lasting bad karma to an end."
Another surprise is that the pic will boast visuals by Hollywood
art director Martin Surya (The Hulk, Paycheck). With a blend
of ancient Chinese/Indonesian traditions and Hollywood visuals,
we could be in for quite a treat. Still in post production,
'Karma' opens in Indonesia, in July.

Umberto
Lenzi's 'Nightmare City' on R1 DVD
Umberto
Lenzi's 1980 take on the zombie sub-genre, (originally titled
'Incubo sulla città contaminata') 'Nightmare City'
is getting an R1 DVD release through Blue Underground. Fast
zombies were nothing new to Italian horror movie fans in the
80s. They're not only fast, these bad boys use knifes and
guns.
Hugo
Stiglitz, Mel Ferrer (Eaten Alive) and Francisco Rabal star
in this wild splatterfest. Originally released in U.S as the
heavily-edited City Of The Walking Dead, this new version
of Nightmare City has apparently been transferred from original
vault materials and is now presented completely uncut.
When
a radioactive spill causes mass contamination, 1000s of infected
citizens are transformed into bloodthirsty undead fiends.
But these are not your standard stumbling gut-munchers; this
is an all-out attack by fast-moving, flesh-ripping, ass-kicking
maniacs that can only be stopped by a bullet to the brain.
Get ready for an orgy of gunfire, gore and gratuitous aerobics
where zombies run, chaos reigns and heads explode.

New

There
was a flurry of news on Simon Hunter’s adaptation of

men and their entanglement with the Japanese army, Chinese
and Russian bandits.

slip again.

'Dusk
Watch' bites the dust?!
Well
this news bites. Timur Bekmambetov, director of the superbly
original Russian Day/Night Watch fantasy horror series has
pretty much killed off any chance of there being 3rd and final
film. During a Q&A session at the New York Comic Con this
weekend to discuss ‘Wanted,’ his latest Hollywood
film, Bekmambetov was quizzed on how the final film (to have
been called Dusk Watch) was progressing. To which he commented:
"Wanted is my Dusk Watch for now, because it's really
the same, a different story, but the same genre. I don't know
when Dusk Watch will happen. Let's say this is Dusk Watch."
The
same genre!? Like hell it is. So that, it appears
is that. If it's true that Dusk Watch will never happen, millions
of fans may never forgive (us included) him.

'Jade
Warrior' on R2 DVD!
A
real treat for R2 martial arts fans. A.J.Annila’s ‘Jade
Warrior’ hits R2 DVD next week. Warrior is Finland's
first ever martial arts film, blending traditional Chinese
swordplay with distict Wuxia overtones - mixed with elements
from Finland's sprawling national epic, the Kalevala. Annila
blends his genres, using both his own heritage and the conventions
of Asian film making to tell the legend of The Sampo. This
pic is visually stunning and was an unexpected but well deserved
hit across Scandinavian/Asian box-offices. The movie stars
Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu (Seven Swords, Rush hour) and
Markku Peltola.
In modern
day Finland, Kai a blacksmith charged with the task opening
an ancient metallic cask found with the mummified remains

in its era, a case that responds to Kai's touch, opening to

that clearly link Kai to an ancient legend and to an all-powerful

and Txabier Alastruey, ‘Underground’ is set in

First
teaser trailer for '20th Century Boys'
Following
on from the slightly creepy TV-spot
that appeared online a couple of months ago, a first teaser
trailer has arrived on the official site for the live action
version of '20th Century Boys.' Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi
(Sword of Alexander) the film is based on the best selling
Manga by Naoki Urasawa.
Here's
the plotline taken from Wikipedia: "Growing older is
rough and Kenji is finding out just how hard it can be as
life starts wearing down on him. On top of trying to make
ends meet running a convenience store he has to care for the
niece that his missing sister left in his care. Memories of
youth make it easier, until those memories come back to haunt
him. Kenji and his old friends are slowly being drawn into
a mysterious conspiracy that could threaten the world. Someone
they know from the past is turning their childhood ideas of
bio weapons, mass destruction, and a giant killer robots into
reality. Who is the mysterious "Friend" and how
does he tie into Kenji's youth? Why are there disappearances
and deaths tied into Ochanomizu University? Their memories
hold the keys to the puzzle, but time and age have clouded
their minds. The strange occurrences and the reach of the "Friend"
conspiracy grow by the day. It will all culminate on New Year's
Eve 2000. Will Kenji and the others be able to put together
the puzzle and save the world?"
The teaser doesn't give much away, but watch out for the last
5 seconds when we get one hell of a eye opening (if brief)
money shot. So expansive is the plot of '20th Century Boys,'
the story will apparently have to be split between two films,
the first of which opens in Japan in August.

International
trailer for Indie British Zombie horror 'The Vanguard'
A
new International trail is out for Matthew Hope's chilling
post-apocalyptic survivors tale The Vanguard. Written and
directed by Hope the film stars Ray Bullock Junior, Shiv Grewal
& Jack Bailey.
The
plot: "The world is in chaos - the last known oil fields
are depleted, over-population has reached critical levels
& mankind is about to become a thing of the past. From
this apocalyptic nightmare, an entity known as the Corporation
devised a course of action to cull the human race and start
a mass depopulation program. But the drug they created to
kill instead reduces humans to a primitive ape-like state,
now known as Biosyns.
Their
sight reduced to virtual blindness, the Biosyns rely on scent
and sound to survive, running wild in the unpopulated countryside. But
for Max -- a young man cast adrift into the wilderness to
live as a hunter/gatherer-- the Biosyns are the enemy, and
must be fought to preserve his very existence. Max has forged
a life without human contact, and every day is a battle to
stay alive. Soon the Biosyns begin to evolve - learning first
to communicate, then banding together, their vision returning
-- and now they're coming for Max."
On the
whole the pic has very slick looks that belie its modest budget.
Vanguard
might very well be a must see for Zombie gore fans. Recently
screened at several festivals and the European film market,
Vanguard
has enjoyed favorable reviews and word is that they have just
secured a distribution deal for the film.

the case) so bad it’s good, we
like to bring you all the news on new Asian horror.
The film is being repped through Phranakorn Film who have

it worth a mention. Still in post production the films due
out this Summer. Here’s the synopsis from the production
companies site:
“Nawin, an army secret service agent decided to withdraw
from a scientific investigation because of unlawful procedures
that involved International forces. Although he had tried
desperately to avoid the illegal acts of the armed forces,
it seems the harder he tried the more involved he became.
He was constantly under surveillance no matter where he went
or what he did which made him realize there was more to the
situation that meets the eye. Jin, a young woman who Nawin
once saved from a brutal attack is undergoing a strange transformation
within her body as her blood circulates through mutation.
This transformation on Jin is what Nawin believes the International
forces are after. The half breed mix between animal and human.
Nawin decides to help Jin by taking her back to her birth
place. As he leads her home, her illness seems to subside.
They will soon grow close and fall in love. When it comes
time for Nawin to choose between her and his life, he awakes
to find that it has all been an image of his imagination…or

MONGOL

U.S. distributor Picturehouse have finally decided on a release

Teaser
poster for Paul Catling's 'TOMO'
A teaser poster
is out for Paul Catling’s feature length version of
his award winning short Sci-fi film ‘TOMO.’ The
original won both the Short Film Award at Sundance Film Festival
and the Grand Jury Prize at the Boston Independent Film Fest
in 2004.
Set in
the near future, a man is stranded on a barren ice-planet
when his cargo ship crash-lands. John's only hope of rescue
is through the help of an emergency survival robot or Tomo
("companion" in Japanese). At first John is cautious,
but as they battle to survive, he drops his guard, finding
friendship and humanity where he least expects it. Adapted
from the award winning short, Tomo explores the relationship
between humans and their machines, refusing to shy away from
what could be a terrifying reality or the great new hope.
The new
film (still in production) mixes live action with CGI and
the CG character ‘TOMO,’ will apparently directly
interact with the human character. If the story is as good
as the effects, this could be brilliant. For a taster of what
treat may be to come, you can take a look at a clip from the
original short film here.

Kiyoshi
Kurosawa's
J-Horror 'Retribution (aka Sakebi)' on R1 DVD
My
my, we are almost being spoilt this month with swathe of great
Asian horror turning up for release on R1 DVD. Latest to show
up on the Radar is the horror pic by acclaimed director Kiyoshi
Kurosawa (Pulse, Cure), ‘Retribution.’ A film
festival favorite, named the "Official Selection"
of the New York Asian Film Festival, FantAsia Film Festival
and the Fantastic Fest. ‘Retribution’ is a slow
burning creepy crime thriller with a hint of the supernatural,
that shows Kurosawa back on top form after his so-so and rather
messy horror flick ‘Loft,’ released back in 2005.
Detective Yoshioka is investigating the drowning death of
a young woman in a red dress. Lying face down in a muddy puddle,
her stomach is found to be full of sea water. As the investigation
progresses, clues begin to appear that point to him being
the murderer - as his fingerprints are found on the body and
some of his personal items are found at the murder scene.
As more bodies turn up, killed in the same way, even the detective
begins to wonder whether he may be the very murderer that
he is pursuing.

'Sushi King'
Now,
what country would make a movie about a Sushi master who heads
to New York and gets caught up in a war with the local competition,
masked super villains and has a very liberal sprinkling
of martial arts thrown in for good measure? Oh thats too easy!
Two
new trailers have arrived for Yukihiko Tsutsumi's 'Sushi King:
Goes to New York.' Based on a popular Japanese TV Asahi show
the film mixes up for us a bizarre blend of action, comedy
and over the top Karate mayhem. Sushi stars Koichi Dômoto
in the lead and goes on general release in Japan on April
19th. Tasty.

'Scare 2 Die' footage
A
full length trailer has arrived out for newbie director Cub
Chien's collection of horror shorts - 'Scare 2 Die.' It's
looking pretty good so far, which we'd hope. As we said in
our article back on March 21st, Chien has worked with two
of the Godfathers of Hong Kong horror - the Pang Brothers,
so it would be fair to expect at least some of the magic n
sparkle to have rubbed off onto him.

Korean
serial killer thriller 'Our Town' on English subtitled DVD
Director
Jung Gil Young's latest film Our Town is about two serial
killers living in one town and when it comes to serial killiers,
two is a crowd. One is the original killer and the
other, a copycat. Starring Oh Man Seok (The Man in the Vineyard),
Ryu Deok Hwan (My Son, Like A Virgin), and Lee Seon Gyun (A
Cruel Attendancer), Our Town delves deeply into the twisted
world of copycat murders. As the mystery unravels, the plot
reveals a shocking revelation about the relationship between
the two killers.
Homicide detective Jae Shin is called in to investigate five
accounts of murder that occurred within the same town. Based
on the nature of the killing methods, the detective concludes
the case as a serial murder. However, despite his efforts,
the killer still remains at large. Concerned over his friend's
frustration, Jae Shin's longtime friend Kyung Joo, a mystery
novelist lends a helping hand - perhaps his sharp wit can
shed some light into the matter. But Kyung Joo is shocked
when he discovers that the killer has been fashioning the
murders exactly as they appear on his novel. The truth is,
Kyung Joo himself committed a murder ten years ago, but has
been successful in repressing his killing urge for some time.
Now, with his past secret on the verge of discovery, Kyung
Joo knows time is running out.
