The pic which marks the directorial debut for Chris Ryan stars Stephen Dorff in a tale of twin serial killers, insane hostages and double-crossing psycho Russian hardmen. Dark fantasy 'The Fall' U.S. theatrical trailer

The official U.S. site for Tarsem Singh's 'The Fall' has just come online and thankfully within is a trailer of suitably high resolution, to do this stunning film justice. We've watched it twice and the easiest way to describe it, is simply...WOW! Singh's previous work, the Jennifer Lopez starring horror pic 'The Cell' was itself hugley stylized and visually spectacular piece of work, but this blows that completely out of the water. 'The Fall' opens in the U.S on May 9th.

Synopsis: Los Angeles, circa 1920‘s, a little immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man who captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story he interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale.

A deadly game 'Obscure: the Aftermath'

Obscure: The Aftermath has just hit the PS2 and Wii. For those unfamiliar with the first game, is a co-op survival horror excursion. The story picks up where the first game left off, finding familiar characters now in college, and once again haunted by horiffic forces at work.

The first thing you'll notice is that for a budget priced PS2 title, Obscure: The Aftermath looks surprisingly good. The character models and lighting effects are well done, and the environments are well detailed. The game's music score is haunting as well, but the real meat and potatoes of the game is the co-op gameplay that really enhances what would otherwise have been a generic survival horror trip.

The few flaws that hurt Obscure: The Aftermath mostly lie within the game's combat system, which doesn't always work out well. Not to mention that the game's story isn't much to look at, and the voice acting is beyond atrocious. Also, the game is quite short (you can finish the game in one sitting if you so desired), and your AI controlled partner isn't always the brightest brain in the bunch either. Flaws aside though, Obscure: The Aftermath is a surprisingly good survival horror yarn that delivers the goods, and the budget price tag warrants a look at the very least.

A glowing review for G.P 506

Korean Times reporter Lee Hyo-won gives us the low down on Gong Su-chang's (`R-Point') new Miltary Zombie horror, with a rousingly positive review.

In his second feature film ``GP506,'' director Gong Su-chang (``R-Point'') tells another agonizing tale about military life. But this time, he takes viewers to the demilitarized zone (DMZ). In this bloody mystery thriller, Gong explores the ever-so relevant yet alien area, where dark secrets and ghosts of forgotten histories lurk.

But the film does not deal with the ideological conflict between the Koreas. Rather, it fathoms the raw human instinct for survival.

On the 38th parallel, between the two Koreas, lies the last remnant of the Cold War. ``Demilitarized'' zone is perhaps the most improper name for one of the most heavily fortified places on Earth. On the south side is the tightly contained Guard Post 506 (GP506), where armed soldiers stay alert for possible aggressions from the North...

Katsuhiro Otomo’s ‘Mushishi’: Review

Regular reader and sometimes reviewer - Mark, gives us his take on Katsuhiro Otomo’s (‘Akira’, 'Steamboy') latest foray into live action film making, the action fantasy ‘Mushishi.’

‘Mushishi’ is a live-action movie directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, whose AKIRA (1988) elevated anime to an internationally recognised form of entertainment for all ages. But since AKIRA, he has prefered to collaborate on projects rather than helming them himself. His only other solo feature films were the live-action satire World Apartment Horror (1991) and Steamboy (2004), which disappointingly gained only a fraction of the attention it deserved. After years of working on this elaborate animated project, obsessivly concentrating on how to realistically animate steam (!), it must have been a relief to direct live-action again with MUSHISHI (2006).

The setting appears to be 19th century rural Japan. A young man with silver-grey hair travels around selling an unusual skill. He is Ginko, a Mushi-shi, an expert in Mushi – a strange, largely unknown part of nature. Primeval creatures existing somewhere between this world and the next. Ginko can help with all sorts of Mushi problems, as they can severely affect anything from health to the weather. At a time when electricity is only just being introduced, there are no advanced technological solutions on offer to diagnose or cure problems with Mushi. Ginko uses expertise, deduction, simple science and occasionally his herbs....

'The Mist' on R1 DVD

The screen version of Stephen King's 'The Mist' is out on R1 DVD this week. Reasons to be excited: It's King. Frank (no-one does King better) Darabont (The Shawshank, Green Mile) directed the movie and wrote the Screenplay. Best of all, it's a rare beast these days, an R rated horror film.

Following a violent storm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumors point to an experiment called the 'The Arrowhead Project' conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group's overall chances for survival. Retreating to a local supermarket, Drayton and the survivors must face-off against each other before taking a stand against an enemy they cant even see.

Japanese horror 'Kabe Otoko' (The Wall Man) on English Subtitled DVD

Based on Morohoshi Daijiro's eponymous manga, The Wall Man (a.k.a. Kabe Otoko) is a moody and mysterious horror from writer/director Hayakawa Wataru. Hayakawa previously directed 7/25 nana-ni-go, which screened at the Cannes Festival International Critics' Week in 1999 and picked up awards at the Vancouver, Torino, and Belfort Film Festivals. Returning with his second film eight years later, he shows no sign of rust, effectively drawing viewers into the sinister and spellbinding secrets that lie beyond the walls. Starring Sakai Masato (Sukiyaki Western) and Ono Mayumi (Premonition).

Acting on an anonymous suggestion, television reporter Kyoko (Sakai Masato) decides to do a feature on the "Wall Man", a mysterious creature, neither human nor demon, that lives in walls and observes the world. Her report is a big success, inspiring lots of audience interest in the myth. What started out as interest, however, turns into obsession as the people around Kyoko become increasingly fixated with the topic and start to exhibit strange behavior. Kyoko's own boyfriend, cameraman Nishina (Ono Mayumi), can't seem take his eyes or lens away from the walls, endlessly snapping pictures. What does he see in the blank walls?

Hong Kong horror 'Yes, I can see dead people' now on DVD

Hong Kong horror ‘Yes, I Can See Dead People’ is up to order on English subbed DVD. Directed by David Lee, as the title might suggest 'I See' has moments of comedy to lighten its otherwise creepy premise, but it still features tense atmosphere and plenty of scares. Steven Cheung departs from his usual sidekick roles to play the lead and is joined by Mandy Chiang (Whispers and Moans) Kris Gu (The Eye 10) and Kathy Yuen.

Synopsis: Nam is a slacker who has the power to see dead people - and he seems to be pretty okay with it. From departed friends to ghostly children, the undead populate the corridors of Nam's housing estate, and he's used to their presence, disturbing though it should be. Things change when his brother Tung (Kris Gu) begins acting distant, and Nam thinks that there may be more going on than just his brother's lack of self control. Estate security guard Fok (Lau Kong) clues Nam in: there are dangerous ghosts too, and one of them is starting to mount his own terror campaign by possessing Nam's neighbors and family. Fok also teaches Nam that those who possess ghost-seeing powers must bear the responsibility to use them properly. But can Nam learn the tricks of the ghost-busting trade before the evil spirits take his brother, for good.

Hide all the scissors! ‘The Slit Mouthed Woman 2’ trailer has arrived

She’s back. A first trailer for ‘Kuchisake-Onna 2’ (The slit mouthed Woman 2) has arrived online and so far we have to admit it’s actually all looking really quite, well....good! Our earlier concerns that this fast tracked sequel (that’s actually a prequel) would end up as a poor cousin to the original, seem unfounded. All in all the production values look pretty high, the lead plays her role (and screams) with gusto and there’s plenty of blood splatter to keep the gore fans happy. Although not in the film, Chow has apparently had a hand in the films production. That gives us hope the sequel can mirror it's predecessors inventiveness, humor and kick ass action.

'Kung Fu Dunk' on English subtitled DVD!

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou's latest offering, the glossy basketball youth film Kung Fu Dunk hits English subbed DVD this month. Released to hefty box office receipts, the film is loosely based on the popular manga Slam Dunk, but with an added kick of kung fu fun choreographed by award-winning action director Ching Siu Tung (Hero, The Warlords). Hong Kong veteran Eric Tsang co-stars as a sinewy agent, along with Wilson Chen (Blue Gate Crossing) and Twins' Charlene Choi (Simply Actors), looking good as Chou's romantic interest.

Abandoned as an infant, Fang Shi Jie (Jay Chou) grew up in a martial arts school and has acquired himself some impressive fighting skills. He can also throw with amazing accuracy, a talent that grabs the attentions of con man Zhen Li (Eric Tsang). Unwittingly pulled into Zhen's hustling plans, Fang crosses the wrong people and gets kicked out of his martial arts school. Zhen then enrolls Fang into First University in hopes of turning him into a basketball star. After some quick training, Fang and team are tearing through the league to the championships, but some foes from Fang and Zhen's past have money staked on the game, and they're more than willing to play dirty to get their way.
