'Golden Flower' - gets Oscar nod

'The Curse of the Golden Flower,' Zhang Yimou's martial arts epic is confirmed as China's candidate for the foreign-language Academy Award nomination. While the decision will surprise nobody it comes with a whiff of controversy.

The big budget film was long the favorite to win the support of the Film Bureau, with Feng Xiaogang's ‘The Banquet’ the only other movie with much of a chance. But the way for "Golden Flower" was cleared when "Banquet" was put forward by Hong Kong instead.

To qualify for the Oscar run, ‘Golden Flower’ was given a limited screening in a single theater in Beijing starting Sept 20. But the movie is not likely to be given conventional public release until December. The decision may be questioned by the producers of Zhang Yibai's comedy ‘Curiosity Killed The Cat.’ They say they will call for a public hearing in China and alert AMPAS to possible rule violations.

These concern the last minute change of venue from Shenyang to Beijing for the public screenings and the requirement that the print shipped to Los Angeles be substantially the same in content and form, as the version in general release in the submitting country. It’s a shame that ‘Curiosity’ has been so overlooked. [Source] Variety

Dimension dabbles in 'Occult'

According to 'Variety' Dimension Films has acquired the movie rights to "O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce," an Image Comics series that launched in July. Dimension is crafting the project as a star vehicle for Rosario Dawson. The actor has headlined five recent films for the genre division, and she co-created and co-writes "O.C.T." She'll play a Gotham police detective who, after stumbling upon a gruesome and bizarre crime scene, is enlisted for a covert squad that uses black arts and mystical weaponry to hunt down and kill soul-sucking ghouls. Dawson created the comic with David Atchison and Tony Shasteen, writing episodes with Atchison while Shasteen illustrates them. Atchison and Shasteen will be co-producers on the film. Influenced by her experience making ‘Sin City’ with co-director and famed graphic artist Frank Miller, Dawson got the idea of launching her own. Dawson recently completed ‘Killshot’ for Dimension. She is currently starring in the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez pic ‘Grindhouse’ and will reprise her role as ‘Gail’ in the ‘Sin City’ sequel. To me this sounds very similar to another upcoming film 'R.I.P.D'. You can read more about that project in a story we posted back on April 11th.

Now there is a poster that has “ohhh I want to see that movie” written all over it. Shot mainly on location in China, CJ-entertainment are set to bring ‘Restless’ a big budget fantasy epic to Korean cinemas this December. Not a huge amount of detail is available for the film as yet. We did however find a brief plot outline for it over at Koreanfilm.org.... "In Buddhism, it is believed that when the body dies, the soul does not immediately depart. Instead it hovers between worlds undergoing several stages which in most cases lead to rebirth. First-time director Jo Dong-ho tackles the subject in a fantasy/martial arts melodrama focusing on the 49 days between death and the next world. the movie will star Jung Woo-sung (A Moment To Remember, Musa the Warrior), Kim Tae-hee (Last Present) and Heo Jun-ho (Silmido, Volcano High)." 'Curiosity Kills the Cat' - Could Compete for Oscar

The new Chinese movie 'Curiosity Kills the Cat' is hoping to compete for the 2007 Oscar's Best Foreign Film award along with The Banquet and Curse of the Golden Flower. For the moment, The Banquet directed by Feng Xiaogang, and Curse of the Golden Flower will represent the Chinese mainland at next year's Oscars.

"The company has already handed in the written application to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television," said Liu Xiaoyong, Curiosity's distributor. According to Oscar rules, the movie must be screened for seven days from September 20 before it is officially released nationwide on October 12, Liu said.

The movie will be shown at the Beijing Purple Light Movie Theater. 'Curiosity kills the Cat', by Zhang Yibai, tells a story set in a modern city in which a woman, her husband, a manicure store owner, a security guard and a country girl who all live in a luxury apartment trigger a number of mysterious events out of sheer curiosity. Zhang's previous accolades include a TV opera Cherish Our Love Forever which he directed in 1998. It starred rising actress-turned-director Xu Jinglei.

Liu said the application includes recommendation letters from four international experts. One recommendation letter pointed out that most Chinese movies vying for an Oscar tend to be about Chinese history or ancient China. That may allude to another possible reason for ‘Curiosity’ being selected along with ‘Golden Flower’ and 'Banquet'. Several sources online have mentioned rumours in Hollywood that academy members are becoming bored with historical Chinese epics always being submitted for competition. Was it perhaps a Chinese proverb that said "don't keep all your eggs in one basket"? Here's hoping it gets selected. 'Curiosity Kills the Cat' (Official Site)

Independent Zombie flick 'Automaton Transfusion' accepted to Screamfest

We first covered news on this great looking independent Zombie horror ‘Automaton Transfusion’ way back in April. Now the film has been officially accepted into this years Screamfest festival. Beverly Hills, CA (August 22, 2006) Rachel Belofsky, founder of the annual Screamfest Horror Film Festival, announced the selection of Steven C. Millers 'Automaton Transfusion' into the 6th annual event, which is to be held October 13-22 at the Mann Chinese Theaters in Hollywood, California. Visit the official website for festival details here.

Movie synopsis: In the early 1970s when everyone in America was worrying about what was going on in Vietnam, the United States Army was secretly developing a way to reanimate the dead. The hope was to have the dead fight instead of the living, but the experiments were shut down when the reanimated corpses were unable to control their hunger for human flesh. Thirty years later the army has decided to reopen the project. Grover City, because of its remote location, would be the home of their main testing facilities. Without warning the experiments go horribly wrong in Grover City and the DEAD are now on the rampage, eating everyone in sight. With the town overtaken by Zombies, a group of High School seniors take it upon themselves to fight back and find a cure for this deadly disease. The four friends battle their way through swamps, forests, blood, and ZOMBIES to survive!

A familiar sounding plot I'll grant you , but when you consider the tiny budget the film was made on, you can see why it has attracted the attention of Screamfest. It looks fantastic. ‘Automaton Transfusion(Official Site)

'Right at your Door'

Right at Your Door is Chris Gorak's writing and directing debut. Previously he was production designer on Lords of Dogtown, Blade Trinity, The Clearing, and the miniseries Taken. First screened at the Sundance film festival in January ‘Right at your Door’ offers a gritty and quite possibly terrifying perspective on the world’s insecurity in the post-9/11 era. Synopsis: "After multiple dirty bombs are detonated, spreading deadly toxic ash across Los Angeles, Brad (Rory Cochrane) inadvertently quarantines his wife, Lexi (Mary McCormack) outside their new home by safely sealing himself inside. With the city under siege and martial law in affect, Brad and Lexi struggle to survive with few supplies, limited time and no information—all the while separated by thin doors and thinner sheets of plastic. When "help" finally does arrive, it appears to be anything but". The film has just been released in the UK by Lions Gate films. No definite date for a U.S. opening as yet, but the new year seems likely.

Second up is ‘M4’. This time from the director of the aforementioned 'Tiger Blade' Theeratorn Siripanwaaporn. The film is tale of murder, action, intrigue, and a drag queen spy!? Plot: "It's been said that ….
There once was a team of four men who were specially trained professionals that were assigned all the impossible missions that had to be taken care of "off the record". That was all in the past.
Since then, these four professionals mysteriously dropped off the face of the earth and presumed living their lives as everyday, ordinary people, who may even pass as your next door neighbour.

One lives his life as a gambler betting on boxing matches.
One makes his living helping people to look beautiful.
One takes a job as a salesman selling anything he can.

One lives a wild life as a drag queen.

One day the law is used against them, threatening their new found freedom and forced them to once again take on a mission no one else dared to do. This mission turned out to be a set-up to wipe out the enemy and ultimately eliminate them too. After smelling a rat in the mission, they band together to form an alliance called M4 seeking revenge and the justice they deserve." The description of the four main characters alone, has me intrigued. The film is currently listed as being in pre production. More news as we get it.

Anime news - 4 new "Evangelion" films to be made

Cartoon maker Gainax will produce four new theatrical features in its iconic "Evangelion" series. The films, the first in nearly a decade, are based on the 26-part TV series that launched the worldwide "Evangelion" boom in the 1990s. The first, helmed by Gainax veteran Shinji Higuchi, will be released in July, the second in January and the third and fourth on a double bill in June 2008. They'll be distributed by Klockworx. The first three movies will borrow some images from the TV show, but with new backgrounds and soundtracks. The stories of the third and final will be brand-new, in response to the many fans who were dissatisfied with the ending of the two "Evangelion" pics directed by Hideaki Anno and released in 1997. All four will incorporate far more 3-D animation technology than the original features and series. The "Evangelion" skein, about teenagers who pilot huge robot warriors against invading aliens while struggling with the issues of adolescence, began as a cult hit on Japanese TV.

Black Magic and Murder in - 'Dukun'

'Dukun' stars Umie Aida, Faizal Hussin and Nam Ron in a tale of a shaman named Diana who dabbles in the occult, and ends up being tried and sentenced to death. Told from the point of view of her lawyer Karim, the horrors associated with Diana’s story involve murder, witchcraft, greed and mayhem, with more than a hint of the supernatural. The film is said to be based on the true life story of Mona Fandey, and her murder of a State assemblyman Datuk Mazlan. Mona a pop singer in her early days practiced black magic to help wealthy, high class, superstitious Malays achieve their aims. She was eventually caught for the murder, and in a trial that lasted more than two months, Mona – along with her husband Affandi were convicted. Just before she was hanged at the Kajang Prison in 2001, it was reported that the infamous murderess had said "I will never die”. Now thats more than a tad creepy! Luc Besson calls it a day

Luc Besson has announced that his ($79 million) 3D film "Arthur," due for a Christmas release in France, will be his last film as a director. Besson has said on several occasions that he would stop directing once he'd reached 10 films — and "Arthur," based on kids' books penned by the helmer, is his 10th. "They are my 10 babies and I love them all. Now it's over," Besson told French radio RTL. [source]

Personally I would certainly count his masterpiece ‘Nikita’ amongst my all time favourite films. He has not always been the darling of the critics, but love or loathe his work there is no denying that Besson has been a huge influence in world cinema over the past 20 years.

Although he will no longer direct he appears to have a mass of work ahead as a producer, including Sean Beans upcoming film 'Come Like Shadows'

Tartan picks up - 'Taxidermia'

According to Variety, Tartan Films has acquired all U.K. and Irish rights to Hungarian helmer Gyorgy Palfi's very strange, but intriguing and stomach-churning surrealist drama, 'Taxidermia,' from Fortissimo Films. It is loosely based on short stories written by Hungarian writer Lajos Parti Nagy and was adapted for the screen by Palfi and his wife Zsofia Ruttkay. Said Tartan managing director Laura DeCasto: "I was blown away by ''Taxidermia' in Cannes and I'm thrilled to be working with such an exciting and invigorating talent such as Gyorgy Palfi." She added: "Tartan Films looks forward to spearheading a taxidermy renaissance here in the U.K." 'Taxidermia' is to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Update on Danny Pang's - 'Forest of death'

We have an update on an a film from one of those prolific 'Pang' boys. We first made mention of ‘Forest of death’ Danny Pangs (Re-cycle, The eye) new horror movie back on April 19th. Now we can have a look at the poster, and more on the storyline involving “killer plants”? That's a new one. Story: Steven is a student of botany who has written his doctorate paper on the theory that "Plants Are Sentient Creatures". He spends all his time and effort trying to prove that plants have feelings and even language. Mary, Steven's girlfriend works for a major TV station and her achievements seem to outstrip Steven's. One day, a criminal has abducted, raped and murdered the Prime Minister's daughter in the forest. Eric was arrested as he was a major suspect in this case. Soon, the truth behind the crime is revealed through Steven's research. An experiment is carried out in the crime scene forest to determine whether or not the suspect is guilty by obtaining eyewitness and evidence: the forest itself. This generates great controversy in the parliament and to the legal profession but is there an answer out there in the forest? Will the experiment succeed? Will the mystery be solved?

'Exes' - French serial killer thriller

If surreal French horror is your thing, then read on. 'Exes' is to be the first "traditional" feature by director Martin Cognito, who is so far better known in France for his art house porn movies such as ‘Virginie’, ’Claudine’ and ‘Axelle.’ An interesting background for a director breaking into more mainstream cinema. Synopsis : A wave of savage and bizarre murders is drowning Paris in terror and blood. Six characters are ensnared in a web of death and deception, caught up in a nightmare in which sexual identity, history and truth are torn apart. Virginie: a successful novelist haunted by a secret. David: a mysterious wheelchair-bound surgeon, and Virginie's confidante. Benjamin and Claire: two cops on the trail of the serial killer. Their only clue: in each victim's mouth, the fragment of a printed page describing the method of death in exact, agonizing detail. Pages torn from a book written years earlier by Virginie's troubled brother Vincent, now long dead by his own hand. Song: an androgynous deaf-mute Eurasian. And Exes: Compelled to enact the perverted, murderous actions of Virginie 's book, Exes is at first sight a monster, a brutal death machine incapable of remorse, betraying not the slightest trace of human feeling. But nothing is as it seems. Has Virginie been straight with the police? Have the horrors of the case driven Claire to a complete nervous collapse? And what is Exes - man or woman? Tormentor or tormented? Psychopath or phantom? Intriguing. There are no trailers to be found as yet alas, but in the meantime you can explore the excellent website for the film here. 'Exes' Opens in France in October.
